The Montgomery County Model Airplane Club is chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), charter number 2232. All members of McMAC are also required to be members of AMA. AMA membership provides liability insurance, a subscription to "Model Aviation" a monthly modeling magazine and access to AMA Sponsored competition events.

The AMA is the world's largest sport aviation organization, representing a membership of over 150,000 from every walk of life, income level and age group. A self-supporting, non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote development of model aviation as a recognized sport and worthwhile recreation activity, the AMA is open to anyone interested in model aviation. As the official national body for model aviation in the United States. AMA sanctions more than a thousand model competitions throughout the country each year, and certifies official model flying records on a national and international level. The AMA charters more than 2,500 model airplane clubs like this one across the country.

The McMAC is also sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Parks and Recreation. This sponsor relationship allows the club to use public space at the Montgomery County Park for airfield and flying space. A use permit (included in club membership) is required to use the facilities. Membership, however, is not required to obtain a permit.
